What Poultry DNA Testing Can and Cannot Tell You

Research and Breeder Informational Use Only

Poultry DNA testing is a powerful tool when used correctly. It can answer specific genetic questions with high confidence, but it does not replace observation, record keeping, or good husbandry.

This page explains exactly what our testing can and cannot tell you, so you can decide when DNA testing is the right tool.

Blue Egg Gene (O / Oocyan)

Confirm whether your bird carries the blue egg gene and how it may be inherited.
Useful for breeders planning crosses and managing blue egg genetics.

DNA testing can tell you:

• Whether a bird carries zero, one, or two copies of the blue egg allele
• Whether a bird can pass blue egg genetics to offspring

DNA testing cannot tell you:

• Egg shade (light blue vs dark blue)
• Egg darkness
• Bloom or cuticle quality
• Egg size or laying rate

Lavender (Self-Blue) Gene

Determine whether your bird carries the lavender gene associated with self-blue plumage.
Helpful for identifying carriers and planning responsible lavender breeding.

DNA testing can tell you:

• Whether a bird is a carrier or homozygous for the lavender allele
• Whether lavender offspring are possible from a specific pairing

DNA testing cannot tell you:

• Feather quality
• Color depth or uniformity
• How lavender will express alongside other color modifiers

Frizzle Gene

Identify whether your bird carries the frizzle gene linked to curled feathering.
Supports informed breeding decisions and helps avoid undesirable genetic outcomes.

DNA testing can tell you:

• Whether a bird carries one or two copies of the frizzle allele
• Whether a bird can produce frizzled offspring

DNA testing cannot tell you:

• Feather durability
• Cold tolerance
• Overall bird health or welfare

Sex Determination (ZW / ZZ)

Determine the genetic sex of your bird using DNA analysis.
Accurate at any age and not influenced by appearance or behavior.

DNA testing can tell you:

• Whether a bird is genetically male (ZZ) or genetically female (ZW)

DNA testing cannot tell you:

• When a hen will start laying
• Fertility or reproductive health
• Future egg production

DNA testing does not diagnose disease, predict health, certify breeding quality, or replace veterinary care.

Results reflect only the DNA present in the submitted sample and do not account for environmental or management factors.

Still Not Sure If a Test Is Right for You?

If you are unsure whether DNA testing will answer your question, please ask before submitting samples. We are happy to help you decide whether testing is appropriate for your goals.
