Frequently asked questions
We currently offer DNA testing for chickens only. Other poultry species are not supported at this time.
We offer DNA testing for the following non-health genetic traits:
Blue egg gene (O / oocyan)
Sex determination (ZW / ZZ)
Lavender (self-blue) gene
Frizzle gene
We do not test for disease, health, or performance traits
No. Egg darkness, bloom, shell thickness, and egg size are influenced by multiple genes and environmental factors and cannot be reliably predicted by single-gene DNA testing.
No. Bloom or cuticle thickness varies by genetics, age, stress, and environment and cannot be measured through PCR testing.
No. Bloom or cuticle thickness varies by genetics, age, stress, and environment and cannot be measured through PCR testing.
We accept:
Clean, freshly plucked feathers with intact quills
Please follow the Sample Submission Instructions carefully to ensure accurate results.
No. Samples should be dry and stored at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Typical turnaround time is 7 to 14 business days from receipt of samples. Timing may vary during peak hatching seasons.
Yes. DNA sex determination can be performed on chicks of any age as long as an acceptable sample is provided.
Results are highly reliable when sample quality is adequate. However, no guarantees are made regarding phenotype expression, performance, or breeding outcomes.
Once PCR testing has begun, fees are non-refundable. If a sample cannot be processed due to quality issues, we will contact you regarding resubmission.
Yes. Results may be shared for transparency and informational purposes, including stating that a bird has been DNA tested and reporting the identified genotype(s). Results may not be represented as certifications, health clearances, regulatory approvals, or guarantees of phenotype, performance, or breeding outcomes.
No. This is non-diagnostic, non-veterinary genetic testing intended for research and breeder informational use only.
No. We do not offer disease testing, resistance testing, or pathogen detection.
No. Client information and test results are treated as confidential and are not shared without consent, except as required by law.
This service is ideal for:
Backyard and small-scale poultry breeders
Egg color focused breeding programs
Educational genetics projects
Plastic bags can be used only if feathers are completely dry at the time of packaging. However, plastic is not recommended for mailed samples.
Paper envelopes are preferred because they reduce moisture buildup during shipping and provide more consistent results. Using plastic bags increases the risk of trapped moisture, which may lead to DNA degradation and inconclusive results.
For best results, submit feather samples in a labeled paper envelope.
