Buff Orpington

At Ederington Homestead, we select for excellent temperament, broodiness, and strong egg production, ensuring our Buff Orpingtons are both productive and friendly.

The Buff Orpington was developed in England in the late 1800s, bred for meat and egg production. Their soft, golden feathers and friendly nature have made them one of the most beloved backyard breeds.

Egg Production and Laying Age

Hens lay 175-225 large brown eggs per year, beginning at 5-6 months old. They are known to go broody, making them excellent mothers for hatching chicks.

Breed Characteristics

Buff Orpingtons are large, fluffy birds, with hens weighing 7-8 lbs and roosters 8-10 lbs. Their thick feathering makes them appear even larger and helps them stay warm in cold climates.

Temperament and Behavior

They are docile, friendly, and love human interaction, making them one of the best breeds for families and first-time chicken keepers.

Ease of Care and Hardiness

Buff Orpingtons are cold-hardy, adaptable, and easy to care for. However, their large size makes them slightly less efficient foragers, so they do well in coops or contained areas.
