Brown Leghorn

At Ederington Homestead, we select for high productivity and strong foraging instincts, ensuring our Brown Leghorns remain efficient and resilient layers.

Brown Leghorns are one of the most efficient egg-laying breeds, originating from Italy and refined for superior production. Their sleek build and active nature make them excellent foragers, perfect for free-range environments.

Egg Production & Laying Age
Hens lay 250-300 large white eggs per year, often continuing to lay well into the winter months. They start laying early, typically around 4-5 months of age.

Breed Characteristics
Brown Leghorns are lightweight birds, with hens weighing around 4.5 lbs and roosters 6 lbs. They have striking golden-brown plumage with black tail feathers, a large single comb, and a streamlined body built for efficiency.

Temperament & Behavior
These birds are independent, active, and flighty, preferring space to roam. They are not the most docile breed but are excellent at avoiding predators, making them ideal for free-range flocks.

Ease of Care & Hardiness
Brown Leghorns are extremely hardy, heat-tolerant, and disease-resistant. Their only vulnerability is their large combs, which may require protection from frostbite in extremely cold climates.
